The Air-Union project or “Automation and robustness of bonded assemblies” was started in 2015 with the aim of developing robust procedures for repair and bonding of carbon fiber structures. The work carried out by Titania, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Material Testing, Corrosion and Protection (Labcyp) of the University of Cadiz (UCA), has reached the optimization of a laser surface treatment, whose results allow to validate the technique as a robust and automatable alternative for the pre-treatment of aerostructures of composite material previous to bonding processes.<\/p>\n

The tests aimed at the certification of the technology have been supported by previous studies with\u00a0 advanced characterization techniques of material surface, such as optical microscopy, contact angle, roughness, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), surface energy and surface chemical composition (XPS).<\/p>\n

Thanks to this project Titania got a deeper knowledge on this technique, including issues such as the cleaning capacity of surface contaminants, the lifetime of the treatment and the limiting conditions of the process, as well as its application in damaged material removal prior to repairs.<\/p>\n

In the Air-Union final phase, the industrial simulation of the process for large aeronautical structures was executed, allowing the project to reach a TRL5 of technology maturity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>
